Chapter Twelve
The ride to Torsburch was terse, at least for Cassandra. While Langven and Verda appeared to be more comfortable in conversation with each other, she could tell that the man avoided speaking to her. And she had a feeling she knew why, too. It was the kind of situation a man found himself in that he did not want to deal with. He needed time to consider what he would do and she suspected that she knew what his decision would be.
There would be no need to address it with him. Pressing him would not help her cause but he would have to answer soon or he would find the decision made for him instead.
As the walls of Torsburch rose in the distance, he grew more silent and sullen.
It was a few hours after midday by the time they entered the gates and the change that had come over the town was clearly visible. The defenses were being shored up and fortified, with additional crenellations added to the top of the walls to protect the defenders. The lack of machicolations was something of a worry, but it was about as good as they could expect on such short notice.
Meanwhile, those who weren't working were being drilled in the use of spears and shields as well as the various ways they could make themselves useful on the walls when the fighting started. Bringing water, arrows, rocks, and other such items for the defenders would be a vital, if overlooked, part of the defenses.

Even so, it was difficult to put much in the way of faith, given the numbers that they had seen approaching.
Caephas was the first to see them ride in. He still helped to drill the village folk but left it to the barbarian twins and jogged to where the trio was dismounting.
"You have long faces," he said but kept his voice down. "I suppose that means you come with ill news."
"Weâll speak to the chieftain's son on the matter," Langven responded. "Although I should remember that he is the chieftain now with his father dead."
Caephas nodded and joined them as they started up the path to the longhall. Word of their return had spread and the young barbarian stepped out to greet them. He gestured wordlessly for them to step inside so they could speak with some assurance of privacy.
"What did the scouting tell you?" he asked once they'd been provided with water to wash the dust from their hands and faces. "I assume that your early return does not bode well."
"You assume correctly," Langven answered and sat with a soft groan. He was tall and like most tall men, so many hours on the saddle made his back hurt. "A raiding party approaches, less than two days' ride from here if they move with purpose. I believe them to be an offshoot of a
